This is the result from a photo shoot where I wanted to mix fashion with my style of ‘shoot and scoot’ urban photography, evolved from The Leaning Chronicles series.
With fashion designer Jessica Jagec (who created the outfits seen in the images) and hair/makeup artist Sarah Waycott-Marr styling the overall look for our model (Salleh Sparrow), we sought to create something dramatic yet ‘ordinary’ to blend in with everyday life on the London streets. Using cafes, doorways and pavements as impromptu makeup/changing rooms we worked our way through four looks.
Aside from the fashion, I wanted to ‘immerse’ the viewer into my urban images so shooting with a rapid but deliberately ‘inclusive’ style was very much my method (hence Bellamy the Blue Dane, rickshaw driver and tourists). As part of this style, it also meant that Salleh and I often had to shoot in the middle of some very busy roads with traffic going back and forth (my assistant, Russ Webb, was helping keep an eye out for traffic). When it was not automotive traffic, we then had human traffic as we were often surrounded by curious onlookers and tourists… but that was also part of the look I wanted to achieve.
To accompany the images, Edward Lui and Kieran Bourne shot and edited a video of our journey which, I hope, gives you a flavour of what happens on my photo shoots. You can watch the video at the end of image gallery (watch out for Salleh’s little dance). Enjoy.
